A portable, professional-grade analyser for the mechanical characteristics of high-voltage switchgear — circuit breakers, load switches, GIS combined apparatus, vacuum switches and oil switches. What it measures

The DB-8000 records the travel–time curve of an opening or closing operation and derives the complete mechanical parameter set from it, alongside direct measurement of contact resistance and coil current.

  • Timing. Opening time, closing time, close–open time, and phase and interrupter discrepancy.
  • Travel. Total travel, contact stroke, overtravel and rebound amplitude.
  • Velocity. Mean opening and closing velocity computed over the defined segment of the stroke, plus instantaneous velocity across the trace.
  • Contact resistance. Direct measurement on up to six channels, in parallel with the mechanical record.
  • Coil current. Trip and close coil current waveform, for identifying armature binding and supply problems.

Key features

  • Non-contact speed measurement. A high-speed imaging sensor measures velocity without mechanical coupling to the operating rod — useful where a conventional transducer cannot be fitted or would load the mechanism.
  • Works with the sensors you already have. Compatible with linear travel sensors, rotary sensors and acceleration sensors, all straightforward to install.
  • Covers the full switchgear range. SF6 circuit breakers, GIS combined apparatus, vacuum switches and oil switches.
  • Everything from one operation. Large backlit LCD with full menu operation; all data and waveforms are displayed after a single operation, with no reconfiguration between measurements.
  • Records stay with the instrument. Up to 2,000 field test records with real-time clock stamping, transferable over USB.
  • On-site printing. Built-in micro printer outputs all data and waveforms at the point of test, so results can be attached to the job before leaving site.
  • Analysis on board. Evaluates the full set of mechanical characteristic parameters directly on the instrument.

Choosing a configuration

The series shares one measurement platform across ten configurations. What differs is channel count and which auxiliary functions are fitted — select on the basis of the switchgear you test most, and whether you need dual-ground testing or an integrated operating supply.

Dual-ground models allow measurement with earth switches closed at both ends, which many network operators now require as a condition of working on the equipment.

Technical specification

The same instrument is supplied in two enclosures. The bench case suits workshop and commissioning use; the carry-on case is built for field work, with the panel laid out inside a sealed transit case.

Where it fits

  • Commissioning and acceptance. Establishing the mechanical baseline for a new or refurbished breaker, and verifying it against the manufacturer's figures.
  • Routine maintenance. Periodic verification of timing, velocity and travel against the acceptance criteria.
  • Post-overhaul verification. Confirming that mechanical parameters have been restored after work on the mechanism.
  • Fault investigation. Establishing what the mechanism actually did during a failed or slow operation.

Mechanical characteristics testing establishes that a breaker's operating parameters sit within their allowed range. For detecting mechanical degradation that has not yet moved those parameters, see WP-02 — The defect your timing test cannot see.
